Arizona's Allonzo Trier suspended for failed PED test

Arizona's Allonzo Trier suspended for failed PED test”

Trier, arguably the most talented guard on Arizona's loaded roster, has been relegated to the bench, where he's become the team's most vocal and visible cheerleader; for three months, nobody knew why. Trier appealed the suspension and reportedly won that appeal, but the NCAA will not allow him to play until the substance has completely cleared his system.

After the news broke last night, Trier released a statement on the matter.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported Wednesday that Trier's suspension is indeed a result of testing positive for PEDs in September.

"I have never knowingly taken a banned substance". The NCAA agreed that I had no knowledge of receiving the substance and my eligibility was restored.

Trier has been allowed to practice and travel with the team but has not yet played in a game. "Unfortunately, I am unsure of when that time will be, but I hope it is soon".

This comes after Wildcats head coach Sean Miller discussed the situation Monday on the College Hoops Podcast (h/t Bruce Pascoe of the Arizona Daily Star).

With 13 games remaining, it will be interesting to see if Trier is able to make it back and help the Wildcats.

They have wins over Michigan State, Missouri and Texas A&M to go along with those conference victories, and single-digit losses to Butler and Gonzaga won't hurt their resume much come Selection Sunday.

Arizona has terrific freshman, an elite defense and Miller as their head coach, but it will be more hard to succeed without their best offensive creator in March. Should the sophomore eventually return to action, he should play a pivotal role in the Wildcats' rotation after averaging 14.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists as a freshman. He apparently has become a more well-rounded player though, and is showing flashes of brilliance during practice (he can practice and travel with the team). Freshman Lauri Markkanen has led the way for the Wildcats, picking up much of the scoring that has been left by Trier's absence.

But the Wildcats can not control the situation.
