Musk: Tesla to issue major hardware revisions every 12-18 months”

In essence Musk is telling customers if they want a Tesla EV with the latest high-tech features, it's the same as getting the latest cell phone, you buy a new one. Tesla acknowledges that AutoPilot is not-yet-a truly autonomous system but rather a package of driver-assistance features, such as emergency collision avoidance, lane keeping, and active cruise control.

Alerts are generally prompt on the instrument cluster in those cases.

This otherwise over-the-air update will reportedly bring the new Hardware 2.0 vehicles roughly in line with existing Autopilot Hardware 1.0 vehicles in some ways, and in other ways improve functionality. Features such as Autosteer+ help the auto better navigate tricky roads; a Seek mode, which will let the vehicle search for a parking spot and come to a driver when its summoned, and a new automatic lane change feature, which will help get drivers around slow-moving traffic on the highway.

On Saturday, Musk tweeted that Autopilot for its cars with HW2 technology - all those made after October 2016 - was being rolled out, and warned owners to be careful while their car's cameras readjust. Autosteer will work below 45 miles per hour, and it's meant to be used on highways that have clear lane markings.

Last October, Tesla announced that all their cars will have the full self-driving hardware suite installed, and should drivers decide to enable it, can do so if they're willing to part with $8,000. But for now, it means that older Tesla cars have more safety and convenience features than its newer cars. The company was being investigated prior to the release of this software, in order to determine, the responsibility for said accident and safety of Tesla vehicles. The feature lets the vehicle alert the driver when an object obstructs the path, which could potentially cause a collision.

Tesla is a different kind of vehicle company from what consumers are used to.

"NHTSA's examination did not identify any defects in design or performance of the AEB or Autopilot systems of the subject vehicles nor any incidents in which the systems did not perform as designed", the NHTSA report said.

Autosteer is intended for use on highways with clear lane markings and maintains position within the lane in slow-moving traffic.
