National School of Choice

In advance of the "National School Choice Week" rally, an event that has become a session tradition over the past decade, organizers said they feel closer than ever to actually seeing a bill for private school choice make it to the governor's desk. These options include traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, online learning, private schools, and homeschooling.

"This is a good day", said Scott, who introduced DeVos at her hearing last week "and there will be more and more opportunities" to open new options for private choice. The Texas House did not vote on a voucher proposal that passed the Senate in 2015; this time, he said, House members should vote.

At a separate news conference, Education Minnesota along with local faith and community leaders equated the tax breaks to vouchers, which allow public money to be spent for private schools.

"We are thrilled to have WLS participate in National School Choice Week by holding this special set of events", said Andrew Campanella, National School Choice Week president.

"For our families to have the same opportunities that wealthier families have when it comes to school is attractive", Washington said.

In addition to ensuring greater peace of mind, research has demonstrated that when parents actively choose the schools their children attend, or choose to educate their children in the home, high school graduation rates increase dramatically. Transportation to any school other than the home school is the responsibility of parents. "We are about to have a secretary of education who not only believes in school choice but has been fighting for school choice".

"What they are gearing for is the idea that we want to take public dollars and divert them to private and parochial institutions and not have the same accountability and standards that you have in public school", Darby said at an event held by the Texas Tribune.

"This is not a war on public education".

DeVos and her allies are fond of making self-righteous claims to be on the side of students in a struggle against self-interested teachers and school administrators. And really even the best school doesn't work for every child.

While interpretations may vary, courts have consistently ruled that wherever a state legislature is tasked with the authority to establish and fund public education, it may create systems for the establishment of other public schools without violating the Constitution.

The Senate this year is promoting "educational savings accounts" letting families use public money for private schooling, as well as tax breaks for businesses that sponsor private school scholarships.
