N.J. Catholic bishop attacked by man while celebrating Mass”

Bishop Manuel Cruz led prayers Saturday afternoon at a New Jersey cathedral when a man dressed in white with a matching hat meandered toward the altar and took a swing at the bishop. The man struck him in the face and knocked him backwards onto the altar, a video from the scene shows.

The attack was captured on video obtained and published online Sunday by TapIntoNewark. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, although officials say his injuries are not serious.

It occurred during a Mass to remember the life of baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente, who died in a plane crash in 1972.

Cruz said he has prayed for Miller. "He is doing well, and is back at the cathedral residence", a Newark Archdiocese statement read.

When the bishop addressed members of the congregation on Sunday, Goodness said, he had a very important message to deliver: "He hopes people will understand this was an isolated incident".

The man, Charles Miller, was arrested by Essex County Sheriff's officers and charged with assault, according to sheriff's spokesman Kevin Lynch. His motive behind the attack is not yet known. He came to the United States in 1966 with his parents, spending a year in Florida before moving to Union City and attending public school in the district. He was ordained a priest for service in the Archdiocese of Newark on May 31, 1980, and was the first Cuban-born priest ordained in the Archdiocese.
