Guards Taken Hostage at Delaware Prison”

State Police and DOC are briefing the media in the prison.

Hostages were taken at a men's prison in DE and the facility was locked down on Wednesday, a state Department of Correction spokeswoman said.

The Correctional Officer's Union said at least three guards, and a counselor are being held against their will by inmates.

The Department of Corrections confirmed the hostage situation shortly before 2 p.m. He said the building under inmate control houses between 120-150 people. Vaughn prison is Delaware's largest prison.

Department of Correction response teams and state police are responding to the hostage situation at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna, according to Wilmington's News Journal.

Earlier, DOC spokeswoman Jayme Gravell said the incident began at approximately 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Gravell said firefighters were called to the scene after reports of smoke and were being held on standby.

There was an assault at the same prison last week, on Saturday, an inmate squirted an unknown liquid at a correction officer. It houses minimum, medium, and maximum security inmates, and also houses Kent County detainees awaiting trial. It is also the site of the state's death row and where executions were carried out. A department sharpshooter ended the standoff by shooting and killing 45-year-old Scott Miller, according to the report.
