In 'sanctuary' fight, Abbott cuts off funding to Travis County

In 'sanctuary' fight, Abbott cuts off funding to Travis Countyā€¯

Travis County officials estimate that there is about $52 million in active state and federal grants that are potentially in jeopardy - that's about half of the county's 2017 budget. Apparently, anything short of being at the beck and call of federal immigration authorities at one's own expense is a sanctuary-city policy.

Saying he wants to make Texas "an even broader patch of prosperity", Abbott in a State of the State address Tuesday also called for property tax reform, making it a hate crime to attack law enforcement, and continuing state efforts to secure the Mexican border.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott blocked funding to Austin on Wednesday after its sheriff said the city's jails would no longer honor most federal immigration detainers.

Abbott has given Hernandez until Wednesday to rescind her policy or face sanctions, including a cutoff of grant funding.

Abbott's cut comes as President Trump has moved to pull federal funding from "sanctuary" cities and counties. Having less money has been a challenge for this legislative session, but not reason enough to stop Abbott from taking action on four - in the governor's words - matters of emergency.

The Star-Telegram reported that Travis County leaders condemned losing $1.5 million in grant money earmarked for crime victim services, courts, and other programs, and they voiced support for Hernandez.

"In a cowardly and unethical attempt to punish our Sheriff politically, Abbott is hurting vulnerable people in Austin and Travis County", Casar wrote. "I am certain you have come to the same conclusion; else you would not be seeking to change current State law to put all Texas Sheriffs in the service of the United States Department of Homeland Security". [Charles] Perry, this is the session when we will ban sanctuary cities in Texas.

Abbott prefers a stricter enforcement, calling for mass deportations of any undocumented immigrants, whether or not they have a criminal record.

Cutting off criminal justice funds sounds like an effective way to undermine criminal justice.

"Elected officials don't get to pick and choose which laws they will obey, we must insist our laws be followed". The committee also approved those bills 8-0.

Bills under consideration in both the Texas House and Senate would ban state pensions from dealing with companies complying with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement targeting Israel. While such a registry has not been proposed, some California senators believe it will be on President Trump's itinerary.

Perry (R-Lubbock) has filed a bill to require all Texas jails to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "If local law enforcement adheres to this request and hold someone for 48 hours, they're violating constitutional law".

The article concludes by reporting that The People Rising, an advocacy group that supports strict immigration enforcement, has announced that it will actively oppose the bills. "I am upholding the law and the Constitution and I am complying with ICE".
