NWSL Announces Broadcast Partnership with A+E Networks

NWSL Announces Broadcast Partnership with A+E Networks”

Lifetime will broadcast one game every week on Saturday at 4 PM ET with a pre-game show at 3:30. He told reporters the league is in "robust conversations" regarding a partnership for digital streaming, not explicitly ruling out a return to YouTube, where most of the league's games have been broadcast the first four seasons, but not confirming the streaming option (s) will remain free and accessible to all with an internet connection, either.

A+E Networks is getting back into the live sports game.

NWSL Media will act as the media and commercial arm of the league, overseeing all of its global broadcast and sponsorship rights.

NWSL Commissioner Jeff Plush, A+E Networks President and CEO Nancy Dubuc, US Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati, and US Soccer and Sky Blue FC star Christie Rampone were on hand to discuss the partnership and take questions.

The transformative theme of the announcement was hard to miss, especially as former USA women's national team (USWNT) captain Christie Rampone spoke as a player who has seen the league grow since its inception five years ago. NWSL Media will also manage all digital assets for the league, including a redesigned website, a new app for both iOS and Android, as well as the league's social media platforms.

The National Women's Soccer League has earned a big win.

It's a bold move for the NWSL, and given A+E's literal investment in the league, complete with more attention paid to ways to generate revenue for the league, it has to be seen as a good deal.

Rampone, the Jersey Shore native who began her career with the USA national team in 1999 and played on every World Cup team from 1999 through 2015, said the investment by A+E Networks "shows that they believe in us as players".

The partnership between the NWSL and A+E also features a new joint venture, NWSL Media. "We are also extremely pleased to be able to present our fans with the most comprehensive national television and streaming packages in our history". The new deal will have shown six games nationwide by the middle of May. Since its founding in 2012, backed by the United States Soccer Federation, it has grown rapidly, with its most popular club, the Portland Thorns FC, averaging almost 17,000 attendants a game last season, according to the league.

During the Q&A a reporter asked: "As a network that wants to be a female media brand, Lifetime viewers [.] maybe they're not sports fans initially and sports fans might not be Lifetime fans, there might not necessarily be an immediate cross over there". What this deal means for the NWSL though, is that matches will be broadcast every weekend on the channel which, as previously stated, reaches a wide range of homes in the US.

This statement shows that Dubuc is committed to the sports part of women's sports.

The NWSL consists of 10 professional teams across the United States, from the Western New York Flash (now the North Carolina Courage) to the Seattle Reign.
