Trump Suggests Federal Funding to UC Berkeley Could Be Cut After Riot”

Protesters broke windows, set off fireworks, and threw smoke bombs and flares, creating a unsafe environment for students and the public.

UC Berkeley Police Chief Margo Bennett claimed to NBC News that officers did not deploy tear gas or make arrests.

Yiannopoulos, Shkreli event canceled after protests erupt at UC DavisHe's a self-proclaimed "internet troll" who has been widely criticized for being racist and misogynistic. He is also a self-proclaimed internet troll and was banned a year ago from Twitter after leading a harassment campaign against "Ghostbusters" actress Leslie Jones, who is African-American. In fall 2014, Berkeley enrolled close to 27,000 students and about 10,500 graduate students, according to its website. Dirks also addressed Yiannopoulos' tendency to single out individual students on stage - such as a transgender student at the University of Wisconsin Madison - for mockery and abuse, which the chancellor said does "not justify prior restraint on his freedom of expression".

Two hours before far-right Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos was to give a speech at the student union, protesters tossed metal barricades and rocks through the building's windows and set a light generator on fire near the entrance, footage from news outlets showed.

Donald Trump floated the cessation of federal funds to the University of California, Berkeley, after protests stopped a speech from alt-right pundit Milo Yiannopoulos.

"Unfortunately, last night, a small minority of the protesters who had assembled in opposition to a speaking engagement featuring a prominent white nationalist engaged in violence and property damage", he said referring to Yiannopoulos, a Breitbart editor.

More than 100 faculty members signed a letter urging the university to cancel the speech.

UC Berkeley has been a bastion of free speech in the United States since the 1960s. A man was shot and wounded at protests outside his January 21 talk at the University of Washington. Yiannopoulos and his supporters contend that the cancelations are an attempt to infringe on his free speech and underscore the left's intolerance.
