Armed man attacks soldier near the Louvre

Armed man attacks soldier near the Louvre”

The soldier fired a total of five rounds, seriously wounding the attacker in the stomach, police say.

Police also said that the attacker's remarks led them to believe that he had meant to carry out a terrorist attack, and was possibly acting alone.

A suspected terrorist who tried to enter the Louvre museum in Paris carrying a machete and backpacks was Egyptian, inital indications suggest.

The attacker wanted entrance into Carrousel du Louvre shopping mall, which is located underneath where the famous "Mona Lisa" portrait hangs.

While the attacker was not carrying any identity papers during the attack, investigators used his cell phone to determine his identity.

A man wielding a machete and shouting "Allahu akhbar" has been shot after attacking a soldier outside the Louvre in Paris, police say.

His father, Reda Refae al-Hamahmy, told a Dubai-based news channel, al-Hadath, that all he wanted was to discover the truth, saying: "I am desperate to know whether he is dead or alive".

An attack by a truck driver on crowds celebrating the Bastille Day national holiday on 14 July also killed 86 people and injured hundreds more. A second person was arrested, according to the ministry, although it was not immediately clear if or how they were connected to the attack.

Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux is on his way to visit the wounded soldier, spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

Police searched an apartment the man had rented in Paris and were working to establish whether he acted alone, on impulse, or on orders from someone.

President Donald Trump has not tweeted about or publicly mentioned that incident.

The guards on patrol outside the museum were just some of the thousands of troops lining the streets as part of the stepped-up response to a series of attacks in France since 2015.

Police also conducted raids at several unnamed addresses across the city following the Louvre attack.
