Australia police discover largest ever haul of cocaine in yacht

Australia police discover largest ever haul of cocaine in yacht”

The operation is the result of a two-and-a-half year joint investigation by Australian and New Zealand authorities.

Officers intercepted the yacht last Thursday and seized the cocaine, wrapped in black bags.

Authorities in Australia have seized the largest amount of cocaine in the country's history, following a raid on a yacht off the New South Wales coast.

Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan said the six men arrested included four Australians, one New Zealander and one Swiss/Fijian. Police believe they were planning on meeting the yacht at sea before returning to Australia with the drugs.

Two men were also seen being led away in handcuffs from the scene.

The crime carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

An AFP spokesman said Border Force officers assisted in the arrest of the six suspects. "The interception of this huge volume of drugs and the charging of these six men is a testament to the officer's drive and determination", he said.

With high street prices making Australia an attractive destination for drug smugglers, police say that they have stopped more than 11 tonnes of illicit substances bound for the local market in the past 18 months.

The AFP's deputy commissioner operations Michael Outram said police hoped the operation's success would send "a strong message" to anyone thinking of smuggling drugs.

"Our partnerships enable us to act as one and our sophisticated intelligence capabilities and commitment prevent drugs reaching our communities".
