Hideki Matsuyama wins Phoenix Open for second straight year

Hideki Matsuyama wins Phoenix Open for second straight year”

A 12 foot birdie putt at the fourth extra hole of a playoff against Webb Simpson has provided Japanese sensation Hideki Matsuyama with his fourth PGA Tour title at the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the TPC Scottsdale.

Once in the playoff, Simpson had a putt to win each of the first three holes, not coming close on his first two on 18 before leaving his putt on the 10th an inch short.

Having started the final round three shots behind 54-hole leader Byeong-Hun An, Matsuyama surged to 17 under on the back of a bogey-free five under 66.

Phil Mickelson got within three of the lead with four birdies through his first nine holes but faded on the back, making four bogeys and a double.

"It was a struggle, especially that playoff, but I'm really happy to win", he said.

Jordan Spieth found some on Sunday, making five birdies and just one for a second straight 67 but it wasn't close to enough.

Louis Oosthuizen, with a new putter and driver, shot 65 to finish third.

This capped off another successful year in Phoenix for Matsuyama.

Hideki had a makeable birdie putt on the 72nd green for victory but left it agonisingly short, all it needed was a gust of wind and it was in.

"That putt at 18 [in regulation], I don't know how it stayed out", Matsuyama said. "I just kept grinding and had patience".

"It's disappointing to not come out on top", Simpson said. This year a record 655,434 walked through the gates at TPC Scottsdale, including a single-day record of 204,906 on Saturday, which is a record attendance for the event. With 70,000 to 90,000 expected Sunday in flawless warm conditions, the event will shatter the overall record of 618,365 set previous year.

Further birdies at the 13th and 15th took him into the lead, but he missed good chances from inside 15 feet at 16 and from half that distance on 17 before his frustrating par at the last gave Simpson a lifeline.

Simpson birdied three of the last four for a 64, the best round of the day.

But his challenge crumbled over the final nine holes with back-to-back bogeys at the 10th and 11th before he dropped more shots at the last two holes to finish in sixth place after a 73. Luckily, (the last putt) went in.
