The snow is expected to start in our area late Wednesday night (after midnight) and continue through most of Thursday. What is means for us, apparently, is the potential for significant snowfall.

Officials with the National Weather Service have issued a winter storm warning for the Lower Columbia Basin.

A steady stream of snow should then blanket the area until about 1 p.m. Thursday as temperatures hang around 30 degrees, according to the weather service.

Get ready for winter weather whiplash.

Wednesday night will probably bring the worst of the week's weather for the area.

Temperatures are forecast to fall from the upper 30s and lower 40s at the onset into the lower 30s by Thursday morning, and winds are forecast at 10 to 20 miles per hour with gusts up to 30 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

"A widespread 9-12" of snow is likely in most of Southeastern New England, with some locally higher amounts over a foot. Chance of precipitation is 20%. South wind 10 to 14 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

A freezing rain alert was already in place Tuesday morning with Environment Canada predicting an "extended" period of freezing rain after a few centimetres of snow and ice pellets fall. A major snow storm is on the way for Thursday. Colder air returns behind the storm for Thursday, with a low of -16C (4F) and a high of -5C (23F).

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 24.
