Clinton, other Democrats rally around silenced US Senator Warren

Clinton, other Democrats rally around silenced US Senator Warren”

The incident occurred after Warren quoted King, who had written a letter to the Senate in 1986 to oppose Sessions' appointment as a U.S. District Judge.

Warren had been speaking on the Senate floor for more than 45 minutes Tuesday night - and she had already been warned once - when Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) invoked Senate rule 19 to shut her down. The letter's subject matter had everything to do the controversial Jeff Sessions' attorney general confirmation process, for King wrote the letter when Sessions went up for Senate confirmation on a federal judge position.

No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator. The Senate upheld McConnell's ruling along party lines, with Republicans agreeing that Warren violated the rules of debate. Speaking about Warren, McConnell said: "She was warned". After the exchange, the phrase "Nevetheless, she persisted" immediately began to trend on Twitter, and by Wednesday morning, hashtags such as "She Persisted", "Let Liz Speak", and "Silencing Elizabeth Warren" were going viral.

The effort to silence Warren largely backfired, turning the MA senator, briefly, into a social-media sensation.

She also posted a full video of herself reading Coretta Scott King's letter, which has since been viewed 4 million times on Facebook.

She was found to be in violation of the rule by a 49-43 vote, and in a separate 50-43 vote her fellow senators determined she was not allowed to proceed. "Sen. Warren, quote, said 'Sen".

"I would respectfully disagree with her assessment of Sen".

Coming from a "majority-minority" state (40-46% Hispanic), Udall was touched by King's 1986 letter on voting rights and strongly believed Warren "not be silenced" from reading it.

But Senate Republicans notably didn't object when Sanders and three other male senators - New Mexico Sen. A vote on Mr Sessions is expected on Wednesday.

I write to express my honest opposition to the confirmation of Jefferson B. Sessions as a federal district court judge for the Southern District of Alabama. Debate on Sessions will continue into the night, and Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from CT, suggested he intends to violate Rule 19 as well. Sessions, I'm out of the game of the Senate floor.
