Blogger forced to pay 'substantial sum' to Melania Trump in defamation lawsuit

Blogger forced to pay 'substantial sum' to Melania Trump in defamation lawsuit”

"It is not a possibility", Harder said. "Any statements to the contrary are being misinterpreted".

It also seems to imply that Melania meant to launch a line of products while serving as First Lady, using her position ("a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. a multi-year term during which Plaintiff is one of the most photographed women in the world") as leverage, but now can't because her reputation has been damaged by the story.

It remains to be seen how Melania will continue her career while husband Donald Trump is in the White House.

One watchdog has launched a lawsuit against Mr Trump, arguing that as he has not divested from his businesses, he is receiving cash and favours from foreign governments through guests at his hotels and real estate deals, in violation of the Constitution. The suit also said the Mail article had "impugned her fitness to perform her duties" as first lady.

Trump had previously filed against blogger Webster Griffin Tarpley, who posted about the allegations, and Mail Media in Maryland.

Both suits were originally filed in Maryland in September, but the complaint against the Daily Mail was rejected on grounds that the court lacked geographical jurisdiction over the matter, which would need to be heard in NY. Richard Painter, former Bush White House Chief Ethics lawyer, pointed out that the first lady is not a public official and not a federal employee, but her husband and Priebus are responsible for ensuring that the White House is not exploited for private gain.

Trump's legal team declined to provide the settlement amount.

Her lawyers conclude that the Mail's report, which spread across social media and blogs, "caused tremendous harm to [Melania Trump's] personal and professional reputation, for which she seeks compensatory and punitive damages of $150 million".

Trump's new suit has been filed with the New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

One of the claims made in the newly filed lawsuit is that Melania missed out on a "unique once-in-a-lifetime" chance to profit off her celebrity.

The language in the suit drew criticism immediately. Her example of damages are that she can no longer launch a clothing and fragrance line using her office as First Lady of the United States.
