Bali Landslides Kill at Least 12 After Heavy Rainfall”

At least 12 people were killed in massive landslides in Bali, Indonesia, which occurred in three villages on Thursday (9 February).

The idyllic tourist hotspot of Bali was partially submerged after five days of torrential rain triggered deadly landslides.

Emergency relief efforts have been undertaken, involving soldiers, police, personnel of local search and rescue office and disaster management agency office as well as Red Cross, Sutopo said.

He said a landslide in Awan Village buried a house, killing four residents.

Two of the seven victims were children: a seven-year-old girl and one-year-old boy, whose mother also didn't survive, according to reports.

Earlier, 12 people were killed in landslides that wiped out several homes in three mountain villages.

He said seven people had been killed, two injured seriously and two received minor injuries.

The agency said villages had been evacuated from the affected areas and no one else was believed to be missing.

The agency said more heavy rains are likely and people should be aware of the possibility of landslides and floods.

Millions of people live in mountainous areas or on flood plains, with heavy rainfall regularly causing landslides and floods on the archipelago.
