Passengers traveling for Orlando International Airport should check their flight status with the airline before arriving at the main terminal.

According to forecasters, the storm is expected to wrap up around 2 p.m. ET.

The storm started as rain early Thursday in eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey before changing over to snow. Area schools are closed, from Philly to NY all the way up to Beantown, and there are reports of more than 2,700 flight cancellations in the area.

NEW YORK -More than 2,000 flights were canceled, winter storm warnings stretched from ME to Maryland and salt trucks across the region were rolling Thursday as the season's most unsafe snow event rolled into the East.

By Thursday morning, 9 inches of snow had fallen at La Guardia Airport, while parts of New Jersey had up to 6.5 inches of snow.

Only Boston, which is served by one airport, had more delays, with 691 flights cancelled. A major winter storm is going to deliver up to a foot of snow for many communities. As many as 14 inches was forecast for NY.

Meanwhile, New York's Big Three airports-John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport-are also being heavily impacted by Niko. By 7:20 a.m., Central Park had already recorded 2 inches of snow, and heavy flakes blanketed Times Square.

A photo shows the Long Island Expressway - a motorway leading to the coastal stretch of land - bare of traffic after almost 15 inches of snowfall.

Anyone planning to travel on Thursday or Friday is advised to check with their airline for delays or cancelations.
