Victor Cruz, Rashad Jennings cut by Giants in salary-cap moves”

The team released Cruz and its leading rusher in 2016, Rashad Jennings, on Monday, saving $10million of cap space in jettisoning the two contracts.

NFL Network's Kimberly Jones reported Monday the Giants have released the veteran wide receiver, per a source informed of the decision. Neither player was in their prime anymore, and the cap savings - now north of $10 million, will help the Giants in a year where they need to address issues on the offensive line as well as possibly re-signing Odell Beckham Jr.

Cruz returned in time for the opener, and he played all 16 regular-season games and in the Giants' wild-card playoff loss to the Packers.

There was a time when New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was pretty close to elite if he wasn't elite.

It's a bittersweet end to Cruz's Giants career after being a beloved fan favorite for so many years.

Cruz suffered a torn patellar tendon in 2014, cutting his season short after six games. In 15 games this past season, he had 39 receptions for 586 yards and a touchdown. In seven seasons in NY, the Giants receiver out of UMass recorded 303 receptions for 4,549 yards and scored 25 touchdowns, and was instrumental in the team's Super Bowl XLVI win over the New England Patriots. "I did some great things there".

Cruz's career, however, was ultimately derailed by recurring injuries.

Unfortunately, Cruz's release was not only expected but a roster move that had to be done.

A former seventh-round pick by the Jaguars, he previously spent four seasons in Jacksonville and one in Oakland.

With the emergence of rookie running back Paul Perkins and the fact that Jennings is set to turn 32 in March, this move was seen as a probable one since the season ended. That year, he was able to total 1,536 receiving yards and nine receiving touchdowns.

The Giants drafted Sterling Shepard in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft with replacing Cruz in mind.

But I do think this is at least an option the Titans should consider.

Cruz wore No. 3 that first training camp - also his college number - but switched to No. 80 once he made the team and could no longer wear a uniform number restricted to quarterbacks, kickers and punters.

"He came to work every day and did everything we asked him to do, and always worked extra to get better at his craft".
