Claude Julien Hired As Canadiens Head Coach; Michel Therrien Fired”

Julien went 419-246-94 while with the Bruins and led the team to a Stanley Cup championship in 2011.

"Claude Julien is an experienced and well respected coach with a good knowledge of the Montreal market", Bergevin said in a statement.

The first-place Canadiens have turned to Claude Julien, recently fired by the rival Bruins, as coach in an attempt to avert another collapse, the team announced.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said Julien had been appointed to bring a "new energy, a new voice, a new direction" to the franchise. That includes being shut out 4-0 by the Colorado Avalanche on February 7, and a 5-4 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes on February 9. The Bruins collapsed at the end of each of the last two seasons, missing the playoffs both times, and this year's team appeared headed for another playoff miss until Cassidy replaced Julien.

Coincidentally, it was Therrien's Canadiens who started Julien's Bruins on the down-slide, when the Habs upset the Presidents Trophy-winning B's in the second round of the 2013-14 playoffs. The 56-year-old previously coached the Canadiens from January 2003 to January 2006, going 72-62-10-15 through 259 regular season games. The Bruins are six points behind the Canadiens in the Atlantic.

With the Canadiens now in the midst of their bye week, the time had finally come for Marc Bergevin to act decisively.
