Russia Violates Treaty, Deploys Cruise Missile”

According to a report in the New York Times published Tuesday, Russia has secretly deployed a cruise missile, violating at 1987 treaty with the United States.

The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. On Monday night, national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned over allegations of improper communications he had with Russia regarding sanctions prior to Trump's January 20 inauguration - and Trump's ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin have always been questioned. A Russian spy ship was spotted off the US East Coast on Tuesday, according to Fox News, the first such incident since Mr Trump took office.

Administration officials says the Russians have two battalions of the missile SSC-8. One was kept at a test site at Kapustin Yar in southeast Russian Federation, and the other was moved to another site in Russian Federation, the newspaper said, citing an unnamed US official.

Moscow specifically deployed a ground-launched SSC-8 cruise missile that was being developed and tested for years. But the "X" has been removed from current intelligence reports, indicating that American intelligence officials consider the missile to be operational and no longer a system in development.

Moscow initially tested the missile in 2014 and subsequently received a letter from then- President Obama that launching the missile would violate the landmark treaty that marked an end to the Cold War, reports The New York Times.
