Cardinals' Reyes to undergo MRI on right elbowā€¯

Reyes first experienced soreness in his elbow late last week and alerted the team's trainers, who chose to wait until Tuesday's physical to administer tests.

Alex Reyes has had elbow issues before.

"It sucks to go through this and miss an entire season, but if those are things that have to happen to get back on the field 100 percent, it's what I have to do", Reyes told reporters.

Unless a trade is made sometime between spring training and the August trade deadline, Reyes' spot in the rotation will most likely be filled internally. General manager John Mozeliak confirmed the diagnosis after an MRI. 2017, because of a sore elbow. He was also expecting to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.

The Cardinals said Reyes had not been medically cleared.

Reyes had been feeling soreness in the days leading up to camp and didn't throw his scheduled bullpen session on Tuesday.

Reyes, whose fastball touches 100 miles per hour, was expected to compete with Michael Wacha to be the team's fifth starter.

The Cardinals have been plagued with similar injuries in recent years. Before a spring training game started, Reyes' season has come to an end. He struck-out 52 batters after fanning 93 across 14 minor league starts. Carlos Martinez, Adam Wainwright, Mike Leake, and Lance Lynn (who himself is returning from Tommy John surgery) are locks to be part of the starting give.
