HTC is working on a new kind of mobile VR headset

HTC is working on a new kind of mobile VR headset”

"Vive is very top end, and in the coming months you'll see our plans in terms of mobility and VR, and it's not a phone slapped onto a headset", said Chang.

CNET reports that HTC has confirmed it will be launching a "mobile VR device" before the end of 2017.

For that reason, it's not a surprise to learn that HTC is planning to release more VR headsets in the future; but its next product is going in a slightly different direction.

Speculating about what HTC's mobile virtual reality solution might be like, we can assume from its mention of U Ultra support that it will still use the phone itself as the VR display. In recent years, the company has watched its smartphone market share fall, forcing it to focus its efforts elsewhere. HTC recorded a loss of NT$3.6 billion ($116.8 million) for the quarter.

Overall revenue for the time period came in at NT$22.2 billion ($720.7 million) for the quarter, which is a big 13-percent drop from the same period a year ago.

The company is one of the early players to venture into virtual reality and has spearheaded an informal alliance to develop the sector which includes Warner Brothers, Alibaba and Valve.

The new device would likely compete with the Samsung Gear VR as well as the Google Daydream View.

While the Vive is in a league of its own at one end of the market, Samsung managed to corner the low-end and shipped some 4.51 million of its Gear VR headsets in 2016.

Even with its decision to exit the entry-level smartphone business, however, the company has managed to sell a few hundred thousand units of its HTC Vive VR headset, particularly in markets where it is used as an "arcade device" for amusement arcades and entertainment stops.
