Indian space agency breaks satellite launch record”

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Wednesday launched a record 104 satellites in one shot on board its workhorse rocket system, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The only other rocket to have successfully launched with maximum satellites before today was the one by Russian Space Agency with 37 satellites. The previous highest number of satellites launched by Isro in one mission was 20 in June 2015.

The PSLV rocket was launched into space at the Satish Dhawan Space Center at Sriharikota in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday, reports the Wall Street Journal. The rocket is supposed to launch the Cartosat-2 first and then the 103 co-passenger satellites will be launched into the orbit about 520 km from the Earth's surface.

Three of the satellites, which weigh less than 10kg each, were owned by Indians, 96 were from U.S. companies, and the rest belonged to companies based in Israel, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. However, the success of the launch, has helped Isro create a new world record and place India among premier spacefaring nations.

The total weight of all the satellites carried on-board is approx 1,378 kg.

This limits India's ability to compete with countries such as France or China for the $300 billion global space industry, and also forces it to hire foreign space firms to launch its own heavy satellites. As far as India's maiden mission to Venus is concerned, Kiran Kumar said that it would be a modest orbiter mission. The first satellite will go in the 17 th minute followed soon by two nano satellites by India. Here are all the details of the tech and numbers behind the record-breaking launch. Its the39th mission of PSLV-C37 rocket in this category.

India's president Pranab Mukherjee and prime minister Narendra Modi welcomed the news, with the latter announcing it on Twitter. "India salutes our scientists", Modi said. "My hearty congratulations to the entire ISRO team for the wonderful job they have done".
