These Ultra-Rare, $4M Lamborghinis Are Being Recalled For Fire Risks”

Owners are being asked to contact an authorized Lamborghini dealer or service point to have the evaporative emission control (EVAP) systems upgraded to the latest version.

Lamborghini is recalling more than 1,450 model year 2012-2017 Aventador cars that can catch on fire due to gas leaks. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a report that said the problem lay with the fuel tank. Yes, even the Veneno, which sells between $4 million and $4.5 million.

Lamborghini goes on to say that the risk is increased when practices like revving in park are done and general asshat behavior takes place (we paraphrased that last bit). Lamborghini's own report back to the NHTSA found that driving the vehicle hard on a very full tank could cause fuel to escape to the carbon canister of the catalytic converter. Certain actions, such as revving the auto while idling, can put fuel vapor close enough to the hot exhaust system to create a fire risk. In turn that could stop the unit's purge valves from working, allowing fuel vapour into the exhaust.

In the USA, about 1,500 vehicles are affected. With not properly treated fuel vapour, particular manoeuvres, as example engine over-revving at idle, could imply impact contact between fuel vapour and hot gases.

In addition to the Veneno, the Anniversario, Miura Homage, Pirelli Edition, Super Veloce, and Roadster "whose technology derived from Aventador models" is included in the recall, with production dates ranging from March 2011 to December 2016.
