Wasteful Borussia Dortmund go down to Benfica

Wasteful Borussia Dortmund go down to Benficaā€¯

Germany's World Cup victor Mario Goetze has been left out of Borussia Dortmund's squad for Tuesday's Champions League last 16, first-leg, clash against Benfica.

Dortmund, who won their lone Champions League title in 1997, fell an alarming 15 points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich following Saturday's shock 2-1 loss at bottom side Darmstadt.

Benfica had just the one shot on target but that will not faze the Portuguese side who will feel they can gain a positive result onMarch 8 at the Westfalenstadion, while Thomas Tuchel will be working on finishing at Dortmund training over the next three weeks to avoid a similar outcome.

Angel Di Maria's brace helped PSG claim a memorable victory over Barcelona, while a lone goal for Benfica saw off Dortmund. However, Andrija Zivkovic is suspended.

What's at stake: The first leg of a home-and-away knockout in the Champions League.

Borussia Dortmund are in Portugal for some Champions League action against Benfica, and they're responding to what looks like a tricky matchup by appearing to set up for a ruthless counter attack.

Tuchel hauled off Aubameyang moments after the 27-year-old missed a penalty in the 1-0 last 16 first leg defeat in Lisbon.

"It is going to be hard as any Champions League match". He has seven goals in 10 games this season and had 36 in 48 games last season.

Aware that many were surprised by Aubameyang's withdrawal, Tuchel explained why he chose to substitute the African star.

Benfica are having a unusual season as well as they struggled through the group stage, but they are still competing for their title and are always tough to beat at home. Safe to say Real Madrid were not impressed with that performance.
