California officer killed, another injured following early morning shootout”

One officer was killed and another was injured in a shootout with a suspected gang member in Whittier Monday morning, authorities said.

The officers had responded to the crash where a driver, who police said was driving a stolen auto, rear-ended multiple other vehicles in Whittier, California around 8 a.m. When officers arrived on scene the other drivers indicated that the suspect had moved his auto.

"When they get him out of the vehicle, they go to pat him down for weapons, they can see he's got tattoos all over his face and all over his neck", Corina said at a news conference.

The officers, who had not yet been identified, approached the suspected gunman's auto completely unaware that it was stolen. The two officers were transported to UCI Medical Center, where one was pronounced dead. The condition of the suspect was unknown.

According to media reports from the scene, a Whittier Police SUV sustained a shattered driver's side window.

The second officer and the male suspect were in stable condition.

Authorities have not released many other details, and it was not immediately clear what prompted the shooting.
