You can now charge your phone without a wire”

A signal generator located outside the room produces a 1.32 MHz tone, which is given a boost by a power amplifier.

"The current travels through the pole, ceiling, walls, and floor, which generates a magnetic field, circulating around the pole". This penetration allows for power to be transmitted efficiently to receiving coils. If the receiver coil is parallel to the plane, it receives no power, which defeats the idea behind this project since the point is to enable people to charge their devices anywhere in the room.

There are, obviously other hurdles, like where you'll place the copper tube and, more importantly, how to retrofit existing mobile devices and home technology like fans to support this wireless, over-the-air charging technology. The only catch was that the room need to be constructed entirely from metal (aluminium). These restrictions are temporary, as the future of this technology may simply require "conductive paint" or "modular panels", the research suggests.

Their method, called quasistatic cavity resonance, has the potential to make wireless electrical power as ubiquitous as Wi-Fi. In addition, the high Q-factor and sub-wavelength operation of the QSCR room allows for the inclusion of windows and doors without any significant impact on system performance. While the researchers ensured the study was conducted according to Federal safety guidelines, there are a few things worth pointing out.

Disney Research takes us another step toward the day when we'll no longer have to think about charging our devices. In essence, up to 1,900 watts can be pumped in, but this would only be safe if the same amount of energy was being used by devices in the room.

That 1900 watts of power we mentioned falls within federal guidelines for specific absorption rate (SAR), which is a measure of the energy a human body can absorb before it becomes risky. But getting it to work has been a bit of a problem, with the extent of modern wireless power coming mostly in the form of electric toothbrushes or flat charging pads for phones. They published their findings in the journal PLOS ONE.

Also if there are no devices in the room using the power being broadcast it can be pretty unsafe, and Disney hasn't really said when, if ever, the technology might be ready for general use.
