Verizon to offer 5G to select customers in 11 U.S. cities”

Shares of Verizon were slightly higher Wednesday after the wireless carrier said it will start offering 5G pre-commercial services to pilot customers in 11 U.S. markets during H1. This test will be available "select customers" - Verizon isn't saying how many - in the following metropolitan areas: Ann Arbor, Mich.; Atlanta; Bernardsville, NJ; Brockton, Mass.; Dallas; Denver; Houston; Miami; Sacramento, Calif.; Seattle and Washington D.C. Of course, since there are no 5G smartphones yet - nor there is an actual universal 5G standard at this point - the tests are for a fixed broadband implementation using equipment from partners Ericsson AB and Samsung Electronics and delivered to a group of homes and businesses.

After AT&T announced its 5G Evolution network, we knew it was only a matter of time before its wireless rivals chimed in with their own plans.

The promises of 5G have been swirling for the last few years - but, finally, the mobile broadband service is getting closer to reality.

Verizon's announcement follows similar steps by competitors.

Based on the specification developed by the 5GTF, Verizon said, forum partners are "well on their way to commercializing chipsets, infrastructure products and consumer devices" for the next generation of wireless broadband.

AT&T said in January it will begin providing 5G services in Austin and Indianapolis at connection speeds of 400 Mbps or better.

Verizon will be the latest wireless provider to pilot 5G this year.

The detail what people are most interested in hasn't been confirmed by Verizon yet.

The FCC in July adopted new rules for wireless spectrum above 24 GHz - in the millimeter-wave band - that it said were aimed at enabling "rapid development and deployment of next-generation 5G technologies and services".
