ADPH: Several UA students diagnosed with mumps”

Toronto Public Health (TPH) confirmed the increase of cases of the contagious viral infection Friday, adding all the patients ranged from 18 to 35 years old and had previously frequented bars in the west end of the city.

The ADPH recommends any UA students, faculty and staff not vaccinated with two doses of measles, mumps, rubella vaccine (MMR) to immediately receive a second MMR from the Student Health Center, their doctor or the health department.

Mumps symptoms often include tender swollen glands below the ear or along the jawline on one or both sides of the face and neck, headache, fever and cold-like symptoms.

These virus outbreaks could be a sign that the current two-shot schedule, which is given in combination with vaccines for measles and rubella between the ages of 12 and 15 months and then when children are between 4-6 years old, may not be strong enough to prevent an infection. Because of this surge, federal health officials are now weighing the option of administering a third dose of the MMR vaccine.

The virus can spread seven days before and nine days after symptoms start. The students isolated themselves for the recommended five days and no longer have symptoms.

It typically takes two to three weeks to get mumps' symptoms after you've been exposed, although some people who are infected with the virus don't get symptoms.

MacDonald said athletes on sports teams are more susceptible to getting the virus. Your healthcare provider can help you decide on vaccination needs.

"In some cases, as many as three out of 10 cases, there can be swelling of testicles - orchitis - and in some very unusual or rare circumstances, like less than one in 1,000, people can have difficulty like pancreatitis, meningitis, and/or much more serious concerns", Sikora said.

"All we can do is tell the students about proper hand-washing techniques, covering your mouth while coughing, and staying home when you are sick", she said.

There have been several large mumps outbreaks in recent years in the USA, prompting officials to consider recommending a third vaccine to prevent the disease.

Nurse Practitioner Crystal Hardy says the mumps is easily preventable, yet seriously risky if untreated.
