Google unveils YouTube TV, a web television service that targets younger consumers

Google unveils YouTube TV, a web television service that targets younger consumers”

The service will cost $35 a month.

Variety reports that YouTube's "skinny" bundle of channels will include ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, ESPN, MSNBC, E!, and National Geographic, along with 10 sports networks, covering 80% of live sports.

YouTube is touting that there is cloud DVR support available for YouTube TV - something that Sling TV and DIRECTV NOW both launched without - and you'll be able to record live TV shows without ever running out of storage. The DVR itself is hosted in the cloud, meaning there's nothing to be stored locally, and users can save as much content as they like for later viewing.

At launch, available channels will be limited to cable networks owned by companies that also own broadcast networks, but that could change in the future.

Google on Tuesday revealed details of YouTube TV, a $35/month TV service will provide customers with 40 network options and several add-on options. "Meet YouTube TV. It's live TV designed for the YouTube generation-those who want to watch what they want, when they want, how they want, without commitments".

Google's platform comes amid a push by television networks to offer their programming on digital platforms in multichannel packages of varying shapes and themes.

Google is launching a YouTube streaming service to compete with cable. YouTube says it has big plans for making ads relevant, and there will be a mix of the ads you see on the free version of YouTube and the ads that traditional TV subscribers see. The service is launching in major U.S. markets soon. Operators like Viacom (MTV, Nickelodeon) and Time Warner (HBO) will likely not be broadcast since these are either still considered exclusives for pay TV or have successful standalone services already.

The $35 price includes six accounts, so that each user receives a personalized account and recommendations. You can go to tv.youtube.com to be notified when it launches. Hulu is supposed to come out with its live streaming service shortly as well.
