Vimeo arrives fashionably late to the 360 video party

Vimeo arrives fashionably late to the 360 video party”

It's Facebook's brand-new, purpose-built app for browsing 360-degree photos and video, and it's launching today on Samsung's Gear VR. The Saved feed is a storage locker for 360 content you've set aside to view later, and the Timeline feed basically lets you relive your own 360 uploads.

Facebook has devoted major resources and billions of dollars to virtual reality, but there has been a pretty clear line between what happens in the main Facebook app and what happens on the Oculus Rift and Gear VR.

Though it's late to the 360 party, Vimeo is different from competitors in that it's focus has always been on filmmakers and videographers over viral content, and it tends to provide some of the best video quality on the web.

Vimeo users can find 360 videos via the service's mobile apps as well as its website, and Vimeo is also highlighting some of the best examples with a curated 360 video channel. And, of course, you can access your own 360-degree content to watch within the VR headset. The Explore feed will offer up content from across Facebook, while the Following feed will only show you 360 photos and videos that your friends and those you're following have posted.

Vimeo became the latest video platform to add support for 360-degree videos Wednesday, and the first one to add a dedicated option to sell videos in the format via its Vimeo on Demand platform.

Once you boot up the Facebook 360 app, you'll see a grand total of four different feeds. To start, you'll simply click the box that says "This video was recorded in 360" when you begin uploading it and then select whether it's a monoscopic or stereoscopic video from a drop down list.

"Ever since 360 photos and videos came to Facebook, people around the world have embraced these new formats", Ayrey and Wong wrote.

All in all, the process of getting 360 content from Facebook and Vimeo should be pretty easy.
