Hales added to England squad in West Indies”

Centuries from Alex Hales and Joe Root followed by a dismal West Indies batting display saw England secure a one-day worldwide series whitewash in commanding fashion.

Fellow centurion Root survived two early dropped catches en route to his 101, which contributed significantly to the tourists' impressive 328 all out after 50 overs in Bridgetown.

West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl first in the third match of the ODI series against England in Barbados.

While a mildly disappointing total for a power-packed team that, on a flat pitch, had reached 219 for one come the 37th over, it always felt too great for an experience-light West Indies side without a successful chase over 300 behind them.

Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes were the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-27 and 3-16 respectively. Plunkett finished with 10 wickets in the series.

Root's unbeaten 90 was pivotal in helping England recover from 124 for six to win the second match of this series in Antigua last Sunday. Alzarri Joseph, 20, came in for the injured Shannon Gabriel, while Carlos Brathwaite kept his place ahead of Rovman Powell.

Root was the ideal support to Hales' lead, joining him at the crease in the sixth over after Jason Roy miscued straight to the mid-off fielder for 17.

Hales is now fit to return to action, and is expected to replace Sam Billings at the top of the order alongside Jason Roy. Hales broke his hand trying to make a diving catch on January 19 during the tour of India. He was given out lbw on 93 off Kraigg Brathwaite but asked for a video review which showed the ball would have missed off stump.

The opener was in with an outside shot at breaking his own national-record ODI score of 171 until he went after another big hit and steepled a catch to short fine leg off Joseph. He got there in 99 balls, and smacked nine of them to the boundary.

Hales found the necessary momentum, largely by hitting Devendra Bishoo out of the attack.

Root was on 86 at the time.

Root rode his luck a little to register his ninth century in this format, with 10 fours from 107 balls.
