Hyperloop Track, First Test Track at Actual Size, Unveiled in Nevadaā€¯

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, first proposed the Hyperloop concept in 2012, and later released a white paper outlining how such a transport system might work.

Hyperloop One, the global leader in developing the world's first operational Hyperloop, released the first images of its 500-m full-scale test structure at the development site (DevLoop) at the Nevada desert in United States, on the opening day of Middle East Rail expo in Dubai today (March 7). According to the startup, the Hyperloop would cut the commuting time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi from several hours to just 12 minutes.

DevLoop is 500m-long with a diameter of 3.3m, and expected to start testing in the first half of this year. Hyperloop One is one of the major proponents of said technology and is now striving to become the very first to make the concept functional in the real world.

A Hyperloop system is a new mode of transportation, capable of connecting to all modes of existing transportation and helping individuals be anywhere and move anything with on-demand autonomous transport.

At its Apex site in North Las Vegas, the company had built The DevLoop, which is 1,640-feet-long and nearly 11 feet in diameter.

Hyperloop One has been marketing the benefits of the high-speed rail system around the world. The Hyperloop system could offer a safer, lower-maintenance and less energy-intensive transportation option, and it could also drastically reduce commuters' travel time, the company said.

Musk released a whitepaper on the Hyperloop technology in 2013, saying he was too busy with other initiatives to develop it and inviting researchers and startups to have a go at development.

Which is why all eyes will be on the Nevada site later in the year, to see what could be one of the most important trial runs in the history of human transportation.

About 4,000 vehicles travel between the two Middle East cities every day, Hyperloop One estimates, and traffic congestion in Dubai amounts to $800 million in lost working hours.

Hyperloop One demonstrated its propulsion system at the Nevada site at a press event last May, where it sent a 10ft sled 116mph on some open-air tracks until the sled hit some sand and slowed down.
