Trump to nominate Noel Francisco for solicitor general

Trump to nominate Noel Francisco for solicitor general”

The White House announced late Tuesday that President Donald Trump will nominate Noel Francisco, a former Washington partner at the worldwide law firm Jones Day, as the federal government's top lawyer before the Supreme Court. At Jones Day he worked with Donald McGahn, the current White House counsel, and is one of several Jones Day alumni now serving in the Trump administration.

Fil-Am Noel Francisco has been serving the said post in an acting capacity. From 2005 until now, Francisco was a partner at the Washington DC law firm Jones Day, where he chaired the firm's Government Regulation Practice - a handy background for deconstructing an administrative state, to say the least. His comments may indicate how his new solicitor general could frame the issue for the Supreme Court. Sign up to our free daily newsletters and get stories like this sent straight to your inbox.

Francisco has argued before the Supreme Court on several occasions, including two high-profile cases from recent sittings.

Last year, Francisco also successfully convinced the justices to overturn the multiple convictions of Virginia Gov.

A former law clerk to the late Justice Antonin Scalia, Francisco brings with him a wealth of appellate experience.

The role of Solicitor General doesn't usually make too many headlines, but that's nearly certain to change in the next four years.

He also successfully fought and obtained a ruling in 2014 that limited the White House from filling presidential appointee positions without the Senate's approval.

If his nomination succeeds, he will be the first Asian-American confirmed by the Senate to serve as solicitor general. Both jobs were during the administration of Republican President George W. Bush.
