Eman Ahmed, who arrived in India at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai last month for treatment has undergone her first surgery after losing over 100 kilograms. "We will attempt to reduce at least 200 kgs in the first six months", Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, bariatric surgeon treating the Alexandria based woman, said.

The Egyptian woman weighed 500 kilos when she came to India last month seeking a medical procedure that would reduce her appetite and help her shed the flab.

The Egyptian is still believed to be the world's heaviest woman ahead of American Pauline Potter who the Guinness Book of World Records recorded at 293 kilos (645 pounds) in July past year.

As per the statement issued by Eman's doctors, "Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on March 7th 2017 at Saifee Hospital".

According to doctors, she was put on anaesthesia and operated upon in an over two hour surgery.

"We are trying to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible", a hospital spokesperson said.

After initially being denied a visa to travel to India, her doctor tweeted a plea directly to the country's foreign minister, who personally intervened.

Ms Ahmed has been in hospital since February 10th when she was moved out of her home for the first time in 25 years by removing the wall from her room and a crane lifted out her bed. "Her progress will be tracked to confirm if she undergoes continued weight loss", said officials from Saifee Hospital.

Abd El Aty has suffered a stroke and faced a series of other serious ailments owing to her weight including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation.

According to medical experts, Abd El Aty was born at 5kg at birth and was suffering from a disruption of the glands as well as from a parasite called elephantiasis.

The bariatric surgery, which shrinks the stomach and is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese, took place Tuesday.
