Poland threatens to derail European Union summit over Tusk

Poland threatens to derail European Union summit over Tusk”

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has congratulated Donald Tusk on his re-election as the European Council President.

"The main objective must be to reconnect the European Union to people and make it worthy of their trust by being more respectful to its member states, focused on where it can add value", he added. The commission's president Jean-Claude Juncker said all the rules had been followed during the vote, and other European Union leaders backed the move with enthusiasm.

The Polish government failed to hold together an alliance of countries able to block the stricter rules, leaving Environment Minister Jan Szyszko demanding an explanation of the voting system and fuming when the tally was announced. "This proves that our economic strategies are on the right track", Tusk said.

Poland is holding out against the re-election of incumbent Donald Tusk, a former Polish prime minister who's a bitter rival of the leader of the country's current governing party.

But on Thursday, Mr Orban abandoned Poland to back Mr Tusk, former leader of Poland's Civic Platform (PO) and a sister party to Hungary's ruling Fidesz in the European People's Party.

The former Polish prime minister thanked European Union leaders for their support following a controversial campaign for the top job.

Poland declared that it would not agree to the final conclusions of the Council but "This does not seem to me to be a disagreement on the substance, but rather a reaction in a bad mood", Michel said.

"If EU politicians think they can blackmail countries by telling them some money would be taken away from them, the EU has very bad prospects ahead", Szydlo told a news conference, confirming the emotional exchange. It involves chairing summits, coordinating the work of the member countries and making sure the 28 nations speak as much as possible with one voice on the worldwide stage.

Before heading into the meeting, French President Francois Hollande, Merkel and Muscat said that Tusk had their full support.

It was the first time such a decision was made without unanimity since the job was created in 2009. Instead it has proposed its own candidate, a little-known Polish MEP called Jacek Saryusz-Wolski. An EU summit is due to elect the president for the next term Thursday.

Tossing diplomatic decorum aside, Poland's government brought the equivalent of a political blood feud to Europe's top table, much to the bewilderment and concern of Europe's leaders.

"There is no need for hurry, no need to make the decision today", Waszczykowski said on TVN24.
