Larry Sanders to sign with Cleveland Cavaliers, per AP source

Larry Sanders to sign with Cleveland Cavaliers, per AP source”

The Vertical's Shams Charania has reported that the Cavaliers are in serious talks with former Milwaukee Bucks center Larry Sanders and the team could sign him as soon as Monday when they return from their three-game road trip. The Cavs have been thin up front all season after letting Timofey Mozgov leave as a free agent and Sanders gives Cavs coach Tyronn Lue another option - but also another new player to work into the rotation. After signing a four-year, $44 million extension in 2013, the center dealt with several significant injuries, including a thumb injury suffered in a nightclub altercation and an orbital fracture. He sustained a season-ending face injury the next season and walked away from the National Basketball Association shortly after, acknowledging an ongoing battle with his mental health, including stress, anxiety, and depression.

The Cavs were expected to address their need for a big man after their three-game road trip concluded in Houston with a 117-112 loss Sunday night to the Rockets. He left the league shortly thereafter and later checked himself into a hospital as he was battling anxiety and depression.

The 6-foot-11 Sanders will bring Cleveland a shot-blocking interior player.

With Sanders on the team, the Cavs will have one of the deepest rosters in the league, when fully healthy. He has averaged 1.8 blocks per game in his career and was second in the league in blocks per game in 2012-13. "With his hiatus, I don't know what he was going through so I can't comment about somebody's personal life because I wasn't a part of it".

The Cavs officially signed Larry Sanders on Monday, and waived Andrew Bogut in a corresponding move.

"Everyone deserves a second chance, and it looks like he wants to get back to playing the game he loves, and hopefully this is his destination", he said.
