Protests in Rotterdam over Turkish rally ban

Protests in Rotterdam over Turkish rally ban”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said a Dutch ban on his foreign minister's visit was like Nazism, as tensions rocketed over rallies overseas to help Ankara gain backing for a key vote.

Turkey and the Netherlands escalated their spat on Saturday as the Dutch withdrew landing permission for the Turkish foreign minister's plane.

In the note, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned what it said were practises contrary to global conventions and diplomatic courtesy and immunities, and requested a written apology from the Dutch authorities.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has been working hard to offend his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies lately.

In his complaint, Ozturk named King Willem-Alexander, Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk, Foreign Minister Bert Koenders and Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb, accusing them of insulting Turkey and violating the European Convention on Human Rights. "I understand they're angry, but this of course was way out of line".

He told a rally in Istanbul Saturday: "You can stop our foreign minister's plane all you want, let's see how your [diplomatic] planes will come to Turkey from now on".

The Dutch decision to ban Cavusoglu from visiting and holding a rally in the port city of Rotterdam came after Germany and other European nations also saw moves to block campaign events.

Turkey responded with a statement that requested to the charge d'affaires that "the Dutch ambassador who is on leave overseas [should] not return for a while".

"Their energy will refresh the Turkish parliament", Erdogan said.

It comes as Germany and the Netherlands revised travel advice for Turkey.

Hours earlier, Dutch riot police had horse-charged Turkish protesters demonstrating outside the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam over the banning of Turkish politicians from campaigning in the Netherlands.

"All Turkish citizens, inside and outside of the country, should have ample opportunity to be informed about the pros and cons of proposed constitutional amendments and to engage in an open, fair and inclusive discussion in the referendum campaign", said Jagland.

"If the Netherlands cancels my flight, we will impose severe sanctions on them that will affect it economically and politically", the foreign minister said in remarks in a TV interview on CNN Turk.

"As an elected minister, a Turkish citizen and a woman l will never give up against this unlawful treatment", she said.

MPs from two Danish parties have said that they oppose election campaigning in Denmark by the Turkish government.

"We do not want internal conflicts imported from Turkey with the assistance of a very self-assured Turkish government".

Foreign Minister Cavusoglu is still looking for a new venue for an event on March 12 after one hotel near Zurich pulled out on security grounds and an alternative, in the city of Winterthur, was rejected as inappropriate.

Bayrakli said: "This shows how ridiculous the action of the Dutch government is". The French government allowed a Cavusoglu to speak to at a gathering in Metz; similar rallies were banned in Germany and Switzerland.
