KY Senate passes charter schools bill

KY Senate passes charter schools bill”

Introduced by Lt Governor Dan Patrick, SB6 would require trans people to use the bathrooms matching their "biological" gender and not their gender identity. SB 6 would levy between $1,000 to $10,500 in civil penalties on schools or government entities which fail to comply with the measure, depending on the number of violations. Lois Kolkhorst, the bill's primary sponsor, said during a debate on Tuesday. If there are more applicants to the school than available slots, the bill sets up a process for a random lottery to decide enrollment.

"This was a retaliatory event", she said. I'm coming after you.

Only one Democrat, - state Sen.

The committee voted against the bill, then tabled it, meaning it could come back before them later or expire. John Whitmire, a Houston Democrat, brought up the problem of transgender men being forced to use women's restrooms, calling it risky and disruptive for both women and trans men, the Morning News reports.

Senator Jose Menendez proposed an amendment that would ask the comptroller to create an official impact study. House Republicans are making changes that include allowing police officers to only inquire about immigration status if someone is arrested, rather than simply being detained.

Fewer than 500 of 125,000 transgender people have changed their gender on their birth certificate, according to estimates from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

During the debate before the vote, Republicans in the Senate clung to the ridiculous argument that the bill would keep men and boys out of women's private places, implying that it will keep women safer. That would send it to the House, where powerful Republican speaker Joe Straus says he has no appetite for a bill he has likened to a job-killer. The cost is estimated at $8.3 million a year.

And civil-rights advocates have said there are many legal problems with the sanctuary cities bills that have advanced this session.

The Senate last month passed a version of the bill that aims to punish cities and counties that don't cooperate with federal immigration agents. "TAB remains committed to fighting and defending the Texas economy against bills that discriminate and run counter to Texas values", Wallace said. "They've made light of the issue, accusing us of wasting time".

"This bill is about politics, not public safety", he said in an email.

"If you believe it's unfair for a for-profit management company to take money away from your school system, you can't vote for this bill".

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who was the Texas chairman of Donald Trump's presidential campaign a year ago, has put what he calls "The Texas Privacy Act" at the top of his agenda.
