Scotland seeks new independence vote before Brexit

Scotland seeks new independence vote before Brexit”

"People have said time and again they do not want to go back to the division of a second referendum..."

If the go-ahead for an independence referendum is given, Sturgeon wants a vote to take place between the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019, just as Britain's Brexit negotiations with Brussels would be coming to a head.

The government has also brought in the possibility that it may bring about an independent Scotland.

"I will now take the steps necessary to make sure that Scotland will have a choice at the end of this process, a choice of whether to follow the United Kingdom to a hard Brexit or to become an independent country, able to secure a real partnership of equals with the rest of the United Kingdom and our own relationship with Europe".

Diffley said Prime Minister Theresa May could refuse a referendum outright "with the risk that public opinion in Scotland will move firmly behind independence" or agree to allow Scotland to hold it only after Britain leaves the European Union.

The prime minister could then trigger Article 50 of the EU's Lisbon Treaty at any time, starting two years of talks that will end with Britain becoming the first country to leave the bloc.

Mark Diffley, director of Ipsos MORI Scotland, said Sturgeon would be hoping that "a very different campaign than 2014, conducted during what looks like a hard Brexit, will persuade enough voters to win".

Sturgeon made her dramatic announcement at a hastily-arranged press conference at her official residence in Bute House, Edinburgh. "We will vote against any request for a Section 30 next week".

However, May has not explicitly revealed so far whether she would block a second Scottish independence referendum.

Sturgeon's decision comes after Brexit, a close UK-wide referendum in which citizens voted to leave the European Union.

The other 27 European Union countries will hold a summit next week without Mrs May to consider their response to what the Prime Minister has called the "defining moment".

Sturgeon said she's been trying to reach a Brexit compromise with Westminster, but has been met with a "brick wall of intransigence".

Angus Robertson told the Guardian his party's priority was to protect Scotland's membership of the European single market, and he was pressing the Prime Minister to offer a special deal to make this possible.

"I am not turning my back on further discussions should the United Kingdom government change its mind", she said.
