Hoffman surfs into Bay Hill lead

Hoffman surfs into Bay Hill lead”

Matthew Fitzpatrick fired a five-under 67 to match Argentina's Emiliano Grillo for the lead after the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill yesterday morning (Singapore time).

Rory McIlroy shot 71 to finish at one-over 145, leaving him 11 shots out of the lead, while defending champion Jason Day had an eagle on the par-5 (16th) and is at three-under 141.

"The up-and-down at 11 definitely kept the round going and gave me a kind of little boost going into the next few holes, " Fowler said.

Sam Saunders doesn't want to trade on his grandfather's name, but it was hard for Arnold Palmer's grandson to not live directly in the spotlight this week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Coming down the stretch, I'm probably not going to think about that too much, I'm just trying to win a golf tournament, to be completely honest.

More news: U.S. dollar squeezed by cautious Fed

Earlier, world No.9 Rickie Fowler (five under) clawed his way back into contention with a sizzling 65, after starting the third round at two-over and a distant 12 shots off the pace.

Hoffman doesn't have one, and wouldn't plan to wear it even if he were to win.

Grillo went on to walk off the hole with a quadruple bogey following two consecutive shots into the water - one of which, admittedly, was really unlucky. In her first outing of the 2017 campaign, Pretswell had two double-bogeys on her card - at the ninth and 17th holes.

"Hopefully, I don't need a birdie tomorrow, but at least the feelings are good going into it", he said.

The four time major victor started the day in 46 position but climbed 38 places to be on the edge of contention. McIlroy's one regret is not getting a chance to see Palmer on the 18th green. He also got the last handshake from the King as the Arnold Palmer Invitational victor. The LPGA Tour returns to domestic soil to play Bank of Hope Founders Cup, a tournament that celebrates the 13 women who founded the tour in 1950.

Michelle Wie shot a 65 to tie with Vicky Hurst, Julie Inkster, Jane Park and Sherman Santiwiwatthanaphong for second place. Playing in record 95-degree heat, Nordqvist broke the tournament 54-hole record of 19 under set by Ai Miyazato in 2013.

Tom Lehman and Jeff Maggert shot 66's.

Champions: Steve Stricker shot a 10-under 63 to take a three-stroke lead in the Tucson Conquistadores Classic, putting him in position to win in his PGA Tour Champions debut.
