Electronics Banned From Some US-Bound Flights”

"We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide an update when appropriate", DHS said in a statement to the BBC.

There was no immediate explanation for why the airline was taking the action beyond saying it was imposing the ban "following instructions from concerned USA departments".

In the now deleted tweet, officials with the airline said that starting March 21, passengers will no longer be able to bring certain portable electronic devices on board with them.

The sole exceptions: cell phones, as well as medical devices needed during the flight.

The TSA bans spare or uninstalled lithium batteries from checked baggage, but not installed batteries, so passengers should be clear to check laptops and other electronic devices. However, the current lack of detail and the secrecy surrounding which airlines are affected by the new directive is bound to cause confusion, and adds to the Trump administration's reputation for poorly conceived and poorly executed ideas.

The Transportation Security Administration distributed the new rule in an email on Monday, The Guardian reported.

A U.S. official said the cabin ban would apply to devices larger than a phone and affect some foreign airline flights heading to the States.

These measures will also affect a flight from Montreal to the Jordanian capital of Amman on Tuesday, according to a statement by Royal Jordanian airlines.

CNN's Jon Ostrower reports that more than a dozen airlines are affected by these new procedures, but it's unclear which airlines we're actually talking about.

In its tweet, Royal Jordanian referenced "instructions from the concerned US departments" but did not offer further details.

But while that 2014 guidance was formally announced, security officials were tight-lipped Monday about any additional changes that might be afoot following Royal Jordanian's move.
